Write down your observations. Write a two-page (1.5 space 12-point type) paper. Put the object title, artist and gallery # in your title. Your paper should include a clear analysis of the work of art and its distinctive features. Remember that a work of art is more than the scene that it represents. Discuss, colors, composition, and application of paint or use of materials. Consider whether it is a fragment or a whole; discuss its intended original use and its current display. You should use information drawn from the textbook, research in the library and/or class notes to discuss the period or style of art represented in your object. You may use label information and or additional information provided by the Museum but if you do so, please be sure to cite your sources. At least two thirds of your paper should be your own observations. Observing a painting is not about making up a fantasy story. An observation paper has to show that you can look at and describe the decisions that the artist has made with regard to color, shape, line, form, space and composition.
