A) to create one or more fictionalized “historical sources” for an
ancient earthquake, tsunami, volcano, fire or riot [4-5 double spaced
pages];
and then B) to describe the kinds of archaeological and scientific
evidence which would survive, and how it would be analyzed by future
researchers [2 double-spaced pages].
For A) you will recall that we’ve encountered a range of different kinds
of ancient literary evidence that attest to historical catastrophes:
narrative histories, letters, inscriptions commemorating building
reconstructions, administrative documents, laws promulgated in the
aftermath of catastrophes, etc. Look back at sources we’ve read, and try
to follow the rhetorical conventions for the genre of each: what did
ancient authors typically include / leave out when they described
disasters? If you choose to create more than one literary source for
your catastrophe [e.g. a narrative history plus an inscription and a
law], consider how sources describing the same event may complement one
another (or not), or record different types of information.
For B) explain the archaeological and scientific record created by your
disaster. What traces would survive for future researchers? What kinds
of archaeological and scientific analysis would be theoretically
possible? Explain how archaeology and scientific evidence might
complement, add to, or contradict the picture presented by the textual
source/s you created.
