Case study essay: Smoking. Nav is 36 and has been smoking roll-ups for nearly 20 years. When he
first started he was smoked between 10 and 15 a day, but this drifted up over the years and he now smokes anything between 20 and 40 a day, depending on how much free time he has. He also really enjoys going out drinking with his friends who are all smokers, and will often smoke 20
cigarettes in one evening. Nav lost his father suddenly about 10 years ago, and his smoking increased sharply after that. He suffers from anxiety and depression and has been on and off antidepressant medication for nearly all of the 10 years since his father died. Nav’s family are often “on his case” about his smoking habit, and he recently tried to quit unaided. Although he managed to quit smoking for 1 month, he  gained nearly a stone in weight and felt thoroughly miserable and attributed both to not smoking. Nav reports that he made a conscious  decision to return to smoking due to low mood. He also reports that  pressure from friends, and it being difficult not to smoke when he is out with them, were other reasons he decided to start smoking again.
Nav does seem keen to try quitting again as his father was a heavy smoker, and this may have contributed to his early death and he has also recently started dating a non-smoker.
