This paper needs to be based on perceptions of afro Caribbean hair in
the workplace. It needs to be non biased. It can begin with how everyone
with an introduction, followed by what is acceptable hair in the
workplace bearing in mind there are jobs which require you to have a
specific hairstyle or have your hair covered (food industries).
Following the discussion about different job roles may require different
hair upkeep, I would like the essay to focus on the type of hair/
hairstyle that is acceptable in a business/ office environment. I would
like to highlight that a lot of afro- Caribbean people go into
interviews with hairstyles different from their own natural hair, for
example; they may wear straight wigs (what is deemed as typically
accepted) as opposed to their afro curly hair so as to avoid prejudice.
I would also like to to highlight the different perceptions of afro
Caribbean hair in the workplace and in some cases the unfair treatment.
For example; some people may not be offered jobs because they may have
dreadlocks, or if they are offered the job, they would be asked to cut
off their hair for a “neater appearance”. Some afro Caribbean women feel
they have to straighten their hair or wear wigs in the workplace instead
of their natural afro suggests that they are uncomfortable with their
natural hair in the workplace. The perceptions are not always negative,
PLEASE INCLUDE SOME POSITIVE VIEWS. There are quite a few books and
research based on this topic.
